Behavioral Health Professional (BHP) Level One

Role of Behavioral Health Professionals (Level One):

The Behavioral Health Professional (BHP) provides behavioral health and skill teaching direct care services to children and families in the home and community settings. The primary focus of the BHP is on behavior management, increasing skill development, and physical development activities. The goal is to increase the child’s level of function and skill development and to decrease maladaptive behaviors.

Educational and Licensing Requirements for Behavioral Health Professionals:

  • High School Graduate and
  • One year experience working with children with special needs issues, either in a paid or volunteer position

Duties & Responsibilities of Behavioral Health Professionals:

The BHP is responsible for adhering to the Individual Treatment Plan (ITP) and accurately documenting the services provided to the child and family. Their scope of practice includes the following:

  • Dressing
  • Hygiene
  • Eating/Feeding
  • Activity level monitoring
  • Family interaction monitoring
  • Safety Planning
  • Promoting/monitoring social interaction
  • Speech support
  • Mood monitoring
  • Medication compliance reporting
  • Reporting of self injurious behavior
  • Reporting of ideation of suicide
  • Reporting of abuse or neglect
  • Implementation of treatment in accordance with The Rights of Recipients Manual
  • Least to most restrictive therapeutic interventions
  • Complete required training
    • Individualized Training Program as set by SRHS
    • First Aid
    • CPR
    • Bloodborne Pathogens, Mandatory Reporting, Dual Diagnosis, Paperwork Training
  • Attend Monthly Supervision and Quarterly Trainings as set by SRHS

To work as a BHP (Behavioral Health Professional) you must meet all of the following:

  • Have High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess ability to pass required background checks and have a clean driving record.
  • Attend any trainings and employee orientations required prior to start of employment.

Behavioral Health Professional (BHP) Level Two

Role of Behavioral Health Professionals (Level Two):

The Behavioral Health Professional (BHP) provides behavioral health and skill teaching direct care services to children and families in the home and community settings. The primary focus of the BHP is on behavior management, increasing skill development, and physical development activities. The goal is to increase the child’s level of function and skill development and to decrease maladaptive behaviors.

Educational and Licensing Requirements for Behavioral Health Professionals:

  • College Graduate or in terminal year with 90 credits in a human service related field and
  • One year experience working with children with special needs issues, either in a paid or volunteer position

Duties & Responsibilities of Behavioral Health Professionals:

The BHP is responsible for adhering to the Individual Treatment Plan (ITP) and accurately documenting the services provided to the child and family. Their scope of practice includes the following:

  • Parent education—role model, coach, discuss (in family meeting) parental skills/techniques
  • Observing family interaction
  • Promoting/monitoring social interaction
  • Monitoring mood
  • Reporting of self injurious behavior
  • Reporting of ideation of suicide
  • Reporting of abuse or neglect
  • Implementation of treatment in accordance with The Rights of Recipients Manual
  • Least to most restrictive therapeutic interventions
  • Complete required training
    • First Aid
    • CPR
    • Bloodborne Pathogens
    • BHP Course
  • Attend Monthly Supervision and Quarterly Trainings as set by SRHS

Behavioral Health Professional - Southern Maine

 

Direct Support Professional (DSP)

Role of the Direct Support Professional:

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides client(s) with Home Support – Quarter Hour, Home Support –Remote Support, Community Support or Work Support, and has completed the DSP curriculum or completed the Maine College of Direct Support.

Educational and Licensing Requirements for Direct Support Professional:

  • High School Graduate and
  • one year experience working with adults/children with special needs issues, either in a paid or volunteer position.

Duties & Responsibilities of Direct Support Professional:

The DSP is responsible for adhering to the Individual Treatment Plan (ITP) and specific needs set forth. They will assist clients with the following:

  • Learning safety skills (crossing streets, getting help, self-protection)
  • Learning what it means to be an adult community member
  • Learning how to take care of your health, be active, and healthy
  • Use public transportation (busses and taxis)
  • Become involved in community activities, clubs, social events
  • Learn what is in your community and how you can get connected – the library, the Y, adult education, etc.
  • Volunteer
  • Be a part of a job club where you can learn about what it takes to get and keep a job
  • Obtain state ID and other things you need for a job
  • Volunteer in places that you think might be interested in working someday
  • Create a resume/references/employment employment portfolio
  • Take classes at the Career Center
  • Explore what types of jobs there are and what your employment goal might be
  • Access department stores, post office, banks, etc.
  • Teach/support money management skills

Reporting by means of Treatment Plan Analysis required WEEKLY.

Personal Support Specialist (PSS)

Role of Personal Support Specialist:

The Personal Support Specialist (PSS) is responsible for the provisions of a number of services to meet the client’s home care needs and to promote their comfort and independence.

Duties & Responsibilities of Personal Support Specialist:

  • Assists with personal care activities including: Baths (tub, shower, bedbath)*, Mouth care, denture care, skin/foot care, Grooming (shampoo, dry/comb hair, shave, nail care), Bathroom privileges (bedpan, commode, toilet)*, Transferring (bed to chair, to w/c, to tub, to shower)*, Dressing and undressing activities*, Ambulation*
  • Assists with household task directly essential to client’s health, including: Planning and preparing nutritious meals, Assisting in feeding if appropriate, Light housekeeping of client’s immediate environment*, Change linen, make bed*, Laundry of clients clothing, bedding, Lifting guidelines, less than 10 pounds.
  • Meets safety needs of clients including safe use of equipment (foot stools, side rails, wheelchairs, walkers, oxygen, Hoyer).
  • Performs range of motion and other simple procedures under supervision of therapist/RN as an extension of therapy service. Plan of care must be in home.
  • Immediately reports any changes in client’s condition to office and seeks instruction.
  • Performs other services appropriate for the discipline as noted on the care plan such as: Grocery shopping or Transporting clients to MD appointment (pre-authorized)

*Notes Activities that are affected by light duty and return to work program.

I want to work as a PSS, what are the requirements?

To work as a PSS (Personal Support Specialist) you must meet all of the following:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • A current, valid driver's license (no major incidents on background check)
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check (nothing more than a level C misdemeanor, no neglect/abuse/exploitation charges)
  • Complete the PSS training course within six months of hire
  • Must be timely, reliable, and professional

Personal Support Specialist

 

Case Manager

Role of Case Manager:

Case Managers at Saco River Health work with local agencies and service providers to facilitate medical and treatment referrals, and ongoing supports consistent with the child’s individual needs.

Educational and Licensing Requirements for Case Managers:

Level 1 Case Managers must have a Bachelors degree in a related field.

Level 2 Case Managers must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree with a specialization in psychology, mental health and human services, behavioral sciences, social work, child development, special education, or a related field.

Duties & Responsibilities of Case Manager:

  • Assists families in developing goals and identifying areas of need, and assisting in social developing plans which are assessed regularly by the team.
  • Refers child victims and their families to appropriate community agencies such as crisis intervention; legal advocacy; counseling agencies for medical, mental, physical, social and educational needs.
  • Maintains case records and completes appropriate documentation.
  • Completes Authorization forms in a timely manner in order (Ten days prior to Continued Stay Review expiration) to prevent a lapse in client services.
  • Works with agencies/supports which are currently involved with the child/family, or are needed during the course of treatment, including schools, mental health agencies, hospitals, welfare agencies, and law enforcement.
  • Coordinates and monitors services, including comprehensive tracking of patient activities in relation to the treatment plan.
  • Assists clients and families in developing goals and areas of need, and assists in social development, assessing them quarterly.
  • Document and maintain comprehensive patient charts, including assessments, ISPs, and documentation of routine visits.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of care plan and progress made by clients
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Case Management (CM) at SRHS services children with disabilities including physical, behavioral and developmental. The CM needs to understand the treatment needs of the child and identify the child’s and family’s strengths. They assist clients and parents in developing self-advocacy skills; utilizing a proactive and collaborative planning process; increasing knowledge and development of natural supports and community resources and enhancing service coordination skills.
